Blue Shield and Sutter Health Reach Two-Year Agreement

Sutter Health & Blue CrossBlue Shield of California and Sutter Health have reached a new two-year agreement after a protracted negotiation that forced some customers to change insurance companies and providers.

Blue Shield issued a press release saying “while the specifics of the new contract are confidential, we are pleased to say that the existing legal rights of Blue Shield and our customers have been protected.”

“We sincerely regret the frustration our patients experienced as the negotiations took longer than necessary,” said Sutter Health Chief Medical Officer Steve Lockhart.

Jacqueline Turrubiartes of ABIS Insurance Solutions, a local medical insurance broker, said “These are two very big players in the local and Northern California insurance market and it would have been very disruptive if they didn’t come to an agreement.”

“With the deadline for individuals to get health insurance being on February 15th, having this issue sorted out will help a lot of people make their decisions.”

Those that don’t have health insurance will be forced to pay a tax penalty due to the new Affordable Care Act also known as Obamacare.
