The Best Spots To Grab Lunch On J Street

By Jimmy Spencer, SacMidtown.com Editor

J Street is the New York Yankees of Midtown. Much attention goes to the neighborhood’s largest vein. There are plenty of high-priced players and it’s always a contender when deciding where to spend evenings out.

But it’s also a great spot to grab lunch for those of us who work or live in the midtown area. There are a number of options, but here are a few of the leaders in the clubhouse:

The Bread Store

Sandwiches, Bakery
17th and J

It’s got that hipster vibe, in a good way though. But most importantly, the sandwiches here are some of the best that midtown has to offer. There are plenty of options without the tricks or gimmicks. It’s the “Bread Store” so you can expect there has to be some level of pride in what houses the meat, cheeses and veggies. And there’s good reason for that pride – the bread stands out (how often do you say that?). Try the sliced sourdough …

Streets of London
British Pub
18th and J

It’s rare that one willingly enters an establishment that consistently smells like aged sandals used in a 15-year-old’s gym class. Yet, patrons continue to visit “Streets” for beers and the selection of fried foods. It’s also got an outdoor patio to escape the stench, foosball for some competition and numerous televisions with the types of sports Americans don’t understand.

Chicago Fire
Pizzas, other stuff too
24th and J

When you want pizza, but you also want to be fancy and important. It’s actually so overrated that it’s a bit underrated. The atmosphere and location is excellent. The pizzas are close to Zeldas on 21st street but without that confused feeling of being in a dungeon.

My BBQ Spot
Barbeque
25th and J

I remember when My (also your) BBQ Spot opened up a couple of years back. It’s truly hard to beat good barbeque food. With Sandra Dee’s in the area, it would have to be pretty good. Well, they did it. The food here is excellent and it’s usually relatively quick to get in, order and eat. Try the tri-tip sandwich …

Beach Hut Deli
Sandwiches
24th and J

Beach Hut is certainly no longer a “hidden” gem. Everyone with a flat bill, sandals or sunglasses knows about this place and enjoys the patio out front or the surfboard tables inside. But if you can get past the clichés of the patrons out front, you’ll find an incredibly friendly staff, great sandwiches with outside-the-box options and a fun atmosphere. (But maybe that’s just because I always wear sandals.)

Original Petes
Pizza, other stuff too
20th and J

This is a place I routinely frequent with groups of buddies. They’ve got great lunch deals and we usually get our meal (with salad) and a soda for less than $10 each. The menu is huge so there’s plenty of options to judge what your friend orders. It’s also a great spot to talk sports, as the many TVs are usually set to ESPN.

Centro Cocina Mexicana has unbeatable guacamole. I’m seriously obsessed with it – I sometimes go just for that. They also have great service, food variety and atmosphere. http://www.paragarys.com/go/prg/locations/centro/index.cfm?hasFrames=true

Pretty good list. I’d like to see one done on Capital as well.
