As you know, Midtowners love Midtown. But sometimes we just “gotta get away”, sort of like the Southwest Airline commercial.

So where do we go when we want to get away? Often times we make the trek to either San Francisco or Tahoe, two very popular destinations within driving distance from Sacramento.

This past weekend, I decided to take a day trip to Squaw Valley, located on the north shore of Lake Tahoe, to check out the First Time Adventure Package for first-time skiers and snowboarders.

Until this past weekend, I had only gone snowboarding once. The last time being seven years ago. Why have I stayed off the mountain and out of the snow for so long? I don’t think it had anything to do with my friends taking me up a Black Diamond on my very first run and leaving me to fend for myself on a massive mountain for a couple hours.

Fast forward to Winter 2010. A couple weeks ago I heard a rumor that Squaw was offering a beginner’s package for $25,

which covers equipment rental, beginner lift ticket and introductory group lesson. That’s quite a deal since the regular price of a Lift/Lesson/Rental Package is $156.00. I couldn’t pass up a second chance at learning how to snowboard with such a good deal like this.

The lessons were divided into six stations labeled A to F, with instructors at each station eagerly greeting students who arrived. Instructors helped beginners learn how to strap into their boards, skate, fall properly, ride heel-edge and toe-edge, as well as how to get on and off the ski lift.

After putting about five hours into the mountain (two of which were lessons), I was able to get a couple good runs in.

With the Beginner’s Package, Squaw offers you $50 off your next Adult Snowsports School (lift/lesson/rental included).

If you are new to the sport or would like to try out skiing or snowboarding, I would definitely recommend going to one of the upcoming Learn to Ski & Ride Days. I had an awesome time learning how to snowboard at Squaw and would certainly go again. They don’t call it Squawsome for nothing!
