The Christmas Tree

By Frances Macias-Phillips, SacMidtown.com

I love the holidays. But as a firm believer in the “No Christmas Before Thanksgiving” rule, I had to take the first opportunity that I had to prepare for Christmas. So this Black Friday, my fiancé and I loaded up on holiday supplies and set out to decorate for our first Christmas as husband and wife.

For the remainder of this past weekend, we embarked on an ambitious plan. There were lights to be hung, a mantle to decorate, assorted decorations to place and most importantly, we had to get a tree.

Our First Christmas Tree

After determining where we were going to actually purchase the tree, based on selection, price and overall quality, we finally settled on a local farm. Sunday afternoon we headed over to the farm to pick out our first Christmas Tree together. After about 30 minutes of searching in the (freezing!) cold, we finally found it. A beautiful eight-foot Noble Fir. It’s perfect for the space we have available.  After we took another quick look around, we finally decided it was, in fact, “the tree,” so we paid and a helpful man at the farm loaded it onto the car.

When we arrived home, to get into the spirit, we made hot cocoa, lit the fire and blasted Christmas tunes. Finally it was time to decorate!

As it turns out, we purchased way too many ornaments but nonetheless, we prepared all of them for hanging, arranged the lights, tried (then vetoed) garland, and finally placed the angel.

With the wedding only five days away, my parents were over to help with wedding preparation. So they were able to document the whole joyful experience. My mom even cried (happy tears, as she explained) as we posed with our dog for a family portrait with the completed tree.

It was truly picturesque. The lights were warm, the house was cozy and the smell of a freshly cut Christmas Tree was wafting through the air. I cannot think of a more perfect way to kick-off my favorite time of year.

May your holiday preparations be as happy and go as smoothly as ours!
