Otis Amey: Back Again

By Otis Amey, Contributor

After traveling all around playing a sport I’ve known since I was 5 years old, I’m right back where my college career began.

After playing football for James Logan High, I came to Sac State on a full-ride scholarship. I had my fair share of major disappointments, but still found a way to excel on the field. After leaving Sac State and playing in the east-West Shrine Game in 2005, I signed as an Undrafted Rookie Free Agent for the San Francisco 49ers.

I made the team and was their punt returner, returning my first punt all the way back for a 75-yd touchdown! After that season, I was released just prior to the beginning of the next season. I played Arena Football for two years, leading the entire league with 50 TDs in 16 games in 2008.

After the AFL folded, I went to play in the CFL (Canadian Football League) for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. I absolutely hated it (the Head Coach and Offensive Coordinator) out there. … I was lied to on a constant basis and deprived of playing time no matter how hard I worked! I asked to be released, then returned to Sacramento to work and train.

I ended up going to an open tryout that the Mountain Lions had, where there were over 340 athletes. I ended up being one of four guys they invited to Mini-Camp.

During Mini-Camp, I quickly learned the basic package that was installed and did well in the short three days we were there. I recently signed my 2010 contract and I am preparing for Training Camp which gets underway on Aug. 22nd.  The home games will be held at Sac State (the first one is on Sept. 25th)!! I hope to see you ALL there!!
